17th Annual Golf Tournament
Friday, June 16, 2017

The tournament is IWC’s biggest and most important fundraiser of the year. This year’s tournament raised funds for scholarships for children in need at the Irene Wortham Early Learning Center.

Golfers played a challenging 18-hole course at a new location this year – Broadmoor Golf Links. Eighteen teams competed in a Captain’s Choice format for the top prizes including golf merchandise and cash. Blue Ridge Pharmacy was the overall winner. Beth Teague from the Teague Dentistry team won Closest-to-the-Pin. Brian Young of Clean Environments won the Putting Contest. A number of raffle prizes were given out, and then golfers and volunteers enjoyed a barbecue dinner provided by Broadmoor. We were especially pleased that clients from our Adult Day Activity program were able to join us for lunch earlier in the day.

Thanks to our golfers and sponsors, we achieved our goal of raising $30,000 for the Early Learning Center. We hope that you will visit their businesses and let them know how much you appreciate their support for people with disabilities.

Business After Hours March 02, 2017

We were excited to host local business leaders from the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce at the Adult Day Activity Center in March. Our sports-themed event featured games like corn-hole and jenga, hot dogs, cold beer and prizes like tickets to local sporting events. The best part was having a chance to show how the Adult Day Activity and Supported Employment programs help people with disabilities learn independent-living skills and hone job-related talents that they can use to find real jobs in the community. Thank you to all who attended!

Flapjacks for Families 2016

Ana, Elsa, Olaf and celebrity waiters from NEWS 13 WLOS served a delicious breakfast and entertained families at our 4th annual pancake breakfast at Wild Wing Cafe in December. The celebrities competed for tips, with the Jay Siltser winning the coveted “Golden Spatula Award.” All profits went to purchase clothes and toys for children at the Early Learning Center, as part of our “Irene’s Elves” holiday giving drive. Many thanks to Cane Creek Pharmacy and Wild Wing Cafe for underwriting the cost of this event, so that all the proceeds could go to the kids and their families.

Halloween 2016
Halloween is a big deal at Irene Wortham Center, with everyone, from toddlers to old timers, dressing up to celebrate all that is spooky. Nothing scares the hard working staff at IWC! This year we had two haunted houses – one at our Rose Street Residential House and one at our Dogwood House. The themes this year were “Haunted Doll House” and “Haunted Circus.” Staff, clients, and friends from the community enjoyed touring the haunted houses, despite the creepy clowns and dolls. Come see us next year — if you DARE!

Dine with Irene!
Thank you to those of you who came to our summer fundraising events at Iannucci’s Chipotle, and Juicy Lucy’s. Altogether, we raised over $600 for the Irene Wortham Center, just by eating out!

Fun Depot Outing. Thanks to the fun folks at Fun Depot, several of our clients and friends enjoyed a great couple of days at their indoor amusement center in June. Our favorite games were definitely bowling, skee ball, and mini basketball. One normally wheelchair-bound client even got to drive a go-cart! Everyone enjoyed picking out prizes at the company store as well. Thank you, Roger and the Fun Depot staff for the free lunch and all the fun!

The 16th Annual Golf Tournament, presented by Blue Ridge Pharmacy and Wells Fargo, took place Friday, May 20, 2016 at Etowah Valley Golf & Resort. Over $28,000 was raised by our golfers, teams and sponsors! Many thanks to the golfers and volunteers who braved a cold, wet day to support children with disabilities! We especially want to thank these sponsors for their generous support:
Diamond Sponsors: Blue Ridge Pharmacy, Wells Fargo
Emerald Sponsors: Blossman Gas, Appliance and Service, First Citizens Bank, Skyland Automotive
Ruby Sponsors: Clean Environments, Mills Manufacturing, Webb Chemical, Xcel Sports

Wings of Hope Awards Dinner
presented By Wells Fargo

On March 10, 2016, over 135 people packed Highland Brewing Company’s new event center to celebrate the successes of those in our community who work with the disabled. Our host for the evening was Jason Boyer, Chief Meteorologist at WLOS-News 13. First, the Olson family was recognized as our Early Learning Center Success Story. Then the Ervin Grasty Employee of the Year Award was presented to Debbie Parton, an Habilitation Tech at our Adult Day Activity Center. Finally, Linda McDaniel, program director of Arc-Buncombe County, was presented with the 2016 Hartig Leadership Award. As a special surprise, she was also honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Pat McCrory’s office.

Over $12,000 was raised by this event to support programs, tuition and supplies for children at our Early Learning Center.

The event was presented by Wells Fargo. Other sponsors included CarePartners Foundation, Clean Environments, Corner Kitchen, HomeTrust Bank, Johnson Price Sprinkle, Mary Ann and Gene Burrell, Skyland Automotive, and Wendy and Bradley Hines.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual pancake breakfast to help the Early Learning Center children and families. Over 75 people enjoyed a great breakfast served up by celebrity waiters from WLOS — Ingrid Allstaedt, Jason Boyer, Zach Green, and Frank Kracher — as well as Chef Bruce Brown of Bruce’s Fabulous Foods in Marion, NC, and author Bill Treasurer and his daughter Bina.

Bill and Bina were the overall winners, with over $750 in tips. For their superior efforts, they received the coveted “Golden Spatula” from last year’s winner, Larry Blunt. The event, which took place at Hickory Tavern in Biltmore Town Square, raised over $1800 and collected 25 toys!

Our 3rd Annual Luau took place on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Juicy Lucy’s Burger Bar and Grill. Staff, clients, and friends of the Irene Wortham Center enjoyed some great food, great music, face painting, balloon artistry and more. Thanks to you we raised over $1200!

Our 15th Annual Golf Tournament took place on Friday, May 8, 2015 at the Etowah Valley Golf and Resort. It was a beautiful, sunny day and both the golfers and the volunteers had a great time. The Wells Fargo Advisors/WLOS Team took the top prize of overall low gross. Blossman Gas and Blue Ridge Pharmacy were the low net winners in each flight. This was our biggest fundraiser of the year, raising over $23,000! Special thanks to our sponsors:
